Located in the heart of central Europe, Austria is a landlocked country surrounded by Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Slovakia. Nestled amid the Alps, Austria has a highly mountainous terrain and is dotted with glaciers, snowfields, and snow peaks. Throughout history, Austria has been ruled and inhabited by many – right from the Celts, to the Romans, Bavarians, the Babenburg dynasty to the Hadsburgs, who reigned for over 600 years. The powerful Hadsburg Empire collapsed at the end of World War I in 1918, and the First Austrian Republic was established. Austria was invaded and occupied by Hitler during WWII, ultimately being liberated by the allies in 1944. Today, Austria is a federal republic and is known to be one the richest countries worldwide. Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria.
Over 70% of the population in Austria is Roman Catholic, with Protestants and Muslims are amongst the minorities. While German is the country’s official language, Croatian, Slovene and Hungarian are the other languages spoken across the country.
The country is blessed with moderate continental weather – pleasant summers, cool nights, sunny winters, and abundant snowfall, making it a go-to destination for winter sports, especially skiing.
